When delving into the world of mirrorless cameras, investing in the right lenses becomes crucial. One lens that caught our attention was the Canon 28-70mm f/2. After spending some time with it, we’re here to share our review of the Canon 28-70mm f/2 Lens! Could this be the right lens for you?
The Focal Length
The focal length is often the first consideration when purchasing a new lens. Whether you need close-up shots, wider coverage, or a versatile middle ground, the Canon 28-70mm f/2 lens has you covered. It offers an exceptionally flexible range from 28mm to 70mm, all while maintaining a constant f/2 aperture throughout.
A Lens of Large Talents
One of the key advantages of this lens is its ability to function as a 3-in-1 solution, eliminating the need for frequent lens changes during a shoot. While this convenience is undeniable, it’s worth noting its humongous size and weight. You might want to make some room on your shelf or in your bag for this one. As expected from its substantial build, the lens is quite heavy, making it tiring to carry, especially during long shoots like weddings. For extended periods of use, you may want to use a harness over a traditional neck strap, or going handheld.
Careful… This Lens is Sharp
The images captured with the Canon 28-70mm lens are clear, beautiful, and sharp. However, its remarkable sharpness can occasionally lead to the appearance of moiré, an optical illusion caused by the camera’s sensor capturing repetitive details closely together. Although this effect is common, it appears more often with this lens, particularly in photos of fine fabrics. Fortunately, Lightroom offers tools to mitigate this issue, which can be accessed with the masking tool.
So What’s the Catch?
In terms of versatility and time-saving convenience, the Canon 28-70mm f/2 lens excels. However, its considerable size and weight should be taken into account, especially for extended shoots. While the lens delivers exceptional sharpness, expect to encounter (more) moiré, though it can be corrected in post-processing.
To us, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. But what really tips the scale is its price point of around $3,000. It may be a riskier purchase for casual photographers but an excellent choice for professionals, particularly those specializing in weddings or seeking to enhance their work.
