At Three Twenty Studio, we’ve been doing lifestyle newborn sessions for quite a while. These types of sessions are typically at your house with all of your family. While the baby is still the focus of these sessions, the bigger focus is your family. Whereas during studio newborn sessions, the focus is typically on the newborn. But don’t worry; depending on the collection you choose, we do get some family photos at your studio newborn session.
In the past, Three Twenty Studio focused mainly on lifestyle newborn sessions for two reasons. One: we didn’t really have the space. And two: we didn’t have a baby specialist like Brie! But now, with the construction of our new studio and Brie, we’re able to offer studio newborn sessions.
As we’re sure you’re aware, a fresh little baby is such a gift, and newborn photography is getting more and more popular. There are various approaches to capturing those precious early moments of a baby’s life, and one of those ways is a studio newborn session. Not sure what that is? That’s okay; let’s define it. A studio newborn session involves taking the baby to a professional photography studio for a dedicated photoshoot. In this blog, we’ll explore both sides of the coin to help you make an informed decision about whether a studio newborn session is the right type of session for you and your family.
The Pros of Studio Newborn Sessions
First off, let’s cover the pros and answer why you might want a studio session.
- Controlled environment
One of the primary advantages of a studio session is the controlled environment. So whether it’s hot, cold, or raining, you don’t have to worry about the weather. At Three Twenty Studio, we keep our studio just a touch warmer to help your little one rest easy!
- Specialized equipment, wraps, and props
Studios have all the equipment, like backdrops, wraps, posing bags, and baskets, on hand to capture exactly what you’re looking for.
- Expertise and patience
Professional newborn photographers are trained to handle and pose newborns safely. They’re also very patient and adjust depending on what is and isn’t working for your little one.
- Flexible
Photographing in a studio offers flexibility for you and your family. You’re able to schedule as early or late as you’d like, with sessions during the day being the most popular. Keep in mind that it’s best to capture newborn photos within the first two weeks of life.
- Less prep for you
When it comes to prep, there’s very little you need to do if you’re booking a studio newborn session. Whereas for a lifestyle newborn session, that’s in your home, you might need to spruce some things up a bit. If you go the studio route, you just need to make sure your little one is well-fed and rested!
The Cons of Studio Newborn Sessions
Now that you’ve heard all the good things, let’s cover some of the cons of studio newborn sessions.
- Travel
When you do lifestyle newborn sessions, the photographer comes to you, but for studio sessions, you, your newborn, and your family have to travel to the studio. Which might not be a big deal, but let’s face it, you just had a baby and might not be up to traveling anywhere. You might just want to be waited on hand and foot, and that’s fair!
- Less candid moments
Studio sessions focus more on posed and styled images of your baby. Whether they’re wrapped or unwrapped, they’re certainly posed. Lifestyle newborn sessions tend to be more candid.
- Fewer photos
More often than not, you end up getting fewer photos when you book a studio session. That’s because there’s a lot more work that goes into the editing process.
- No pets
A lot of studios, including Three Twenty Studio, don’t allow pets in the studio. This is something to think about if your family has four-legged members. If you’re not worried about them being in the photos, then it’s no big deal!
Studio newborn sessions offer benefits and drawbacks. So when you’re deciding between a Studio or Lifestyle Newborn, it’s important to think about what works best for you, your family, and your baby! And remember, the goal of newborn sessions is to celebrate the precious addition to your family!
