The start of a new year usually brings a flurry of resolutions—gym memberships, meal prep, and organized closets. But here at Three Twenty Studio, we’re proposing  a different kind of goal for 2026: The Year of the Memory.

As a team of parents, we know how quickly life moves. One minute you’re a “personal paparazzi,” and the next, you’re looking back at a blurry camera roll wondering where the time went.

If you want to take more (and better) photos this year without being “that person” who views life through a small screen, here is your guide to documenting the everyday moments.

1. The “First 60 Seconds” Rule

When you’re at a birthday party or a sunset walk, allow yourself the first 60 seconds to take your photos. Get the wide shot, the close-up of the smile, and maybe a quick video. Then put the phone in your pocket. By setting a time limit, you give yourself permission to record and save the memory and then experience it with your loved ones!.

2. Look for the “In-Between” Moments

We often wait for the “big” things in life. The staged smile in front of the Christmas tree or the posed graduation photo. But life happens in the “in-between.” It’s the flour on the counter during Saturday morning pancakes, the messy playroom, or the way your toddler holds your thumb. These are the cozy, everyday lived-in feelings that you’ll actually want to remember ten years from now.

3. Stop Waiting for “Perfect”

If you wait until you’ve lost weight, the house is spotless, or everyone is perfectly coordinated, you’re going to miss out on documenting years of your life. Trust us! If your current family photos feature skinny jeans and old trends, it’s okay to laugh about it! Life is messy and beautiful and we all go through different seasons of life.. Don’t let “perfect” be the enemy of “documented.”

4. Get Yourself in the Frame

To the moms, sisters, and friends who are usually the designated photographers: stop being invisible. Your family wants to see you in these memories too. Hand the phone to your husband, use a self-timer, or lean on a friend. Your presence in the photo is a gift to your family, and your future self.

5. Know When to Outsource the Memories

The best way to be 100% present for a major milestone is to let someone else handle the camera. Whether it’s your wedding day, a senior session for your graduate, or a newborn lifestyle shoot, having a professional there allows you to feel the emotion of the day without the stress of “getting the shot.” And don’t be afraid to schedule that “just because” family, couples, or best friend session!
